Interest in golf in western China has lagged that in the east, and the Luxehills, which opened in 2005, has set the standard for courses in the region. Mark Hollinger of the JMP group, one of the more prolific Western designers active in China, took on the task of creating this course at the edge of Chengdou, a city famous for spicy food. This superb course was created as the heart of a high-end residential complex, and the maintenance befits the posh surroundings. Immediately noticeable is the excellent use of bunkering: wide, eye-catching sand traps help to define the look and feel of the course. It is the home of the million-dollar Luxehills Championship that opens the One Asia Tour. Of the two signature holes, the fun par 3 2nd calls for shots across a rocky pond, and the short 12th has a green framed and protected by a stunning waterfall.
