A public course when it opened in 2003, the Blackhawk has since been reincorporated as a private club. This was one of Canada's first minimalist courses, and it utilizes the full potential of its wild setting, particular on the last nine holes, which are threaded down into a river valley. Course architect Rod Whitman, known for collaborations with Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, has created a variety of holes inspired by the great courses of the past. Here difficult and imposing bunkers contrast with ample fairways and fast greens. Stand-outs include the par 4 2nd hole and the par 5 11th, whose 590 yards descend from the tee more than a hundred feet to the fairway to culminate in a green surrounded by water amid the river canyon. Among the top golfers who have taken the challenge for exhibition games here include Stephen Ames, Natalie Gulbis, Craig Stadler and Tom Watson.
