Entertainer Bing Crosby once praised the contribution of Samuel Morse and his Del Monte Property Company to Monterey Peninsula by saying that, "without Sam's vision and his dedication to perfection we would not have the golf courses we enjoy today and this whole area would just have been another Coney Island." The Shore was originally to be one of two courses at Monterey, but plans for the second were apparently scrapped when membership failed to meet expected goals. Having been built in 1961, the course was able to occupy some of the finest ground on the peninsula, with the Pacific in view from almost any point. The Shore was long overshadowed by the nearby Dunes, but the refurbishment initiated not long after the turn of the millennium by Mike Strantz has turned the tables, and now the course is on a par with Cypress Point and Pebble Beach.
