Perth's historic courses are all to be found in the northern suburbs, but within the last few years the Cut, just to the south in Mandurah, has come to rival Royal County Down and Cypress Point. Right along the seashore by the mouth of the Dawesville Channel, the Cut is a links-style course running through the dunes amidst tight, dense scrub. Hole after hole, every one offering unique delights, extends up and over the sandy hills. As on any links course, strong winds blow most of the time, but the Cut's length provides all the room needed to play the low, hands-and-arms shots needed to face the breezes. Course architect James Wilcher spent ten years on Greg Norman's design team in Australia and Asia, and drew inspiration from the Mackenzie masterpieces all round the country; starting with a great site, he made the most of it.
