Hope Island is a development that took shape relatively recently in the choice location north past Surfers Paradise where golf really took off. Nearby Sanctuary Cove became an early draw because it was designed by Arnold Palmer. Here at Hope Island, Peter Thomson teamed up with Mike Wolveridge to create a links-style course that from the back tees stands prepared if the pros show up. Hope Island bears testament to the fact that, among contemporary architects, Thomson, when he builds on the shore, remains the most true to the subtleties of links golf. In particular, he loves optical illusions, for instance making his bunkers up by the greens appear closer than they are. The course covers a fairly large patch of ground, with some of the holes coming in at 500 meters plus, so hire a cart and make use of the tees that are more forward.
