Our 4 days at Barnbougle were without any doubt the golfing highlight of our time in Australia. Whilst I marginally preferred The Lost Farm course, Mrs V (the proper golfer in our family) has The Dunes as her favourite. Either way both are magical places & a real privilege to play. Harder in my view than the Lost Farm course, the front nine of this Tom Doak masterpiece is nothing short of sensational. The back nine is also great, & a proper test, whilst visually not quite the equal of what comes before. Barnbougle is a true Golfing Mecca with good facilities off the course too. Everyone there has come to play golf & I can’t remember seeing such a collection of happy golfers in one location ever before. Can’t wait to return.
The Dunes course is certainly the tougher of the two courses at Barnbougle. The fairways here are quite wide, with enough room to move off the tee for all golfers, which side exactly you're required to be on is another thing ! Plenty of tee box options and depending the winds, you may want to lessen the length by teeing off on the front tees. Visually stunning layout with good variation of length across all three types of holes. It is a truly remarkable links course with undulating fairways and greens. The course is world class and golfers from all over the world flock here because of the seaside links your greeted with upon playing here. Enjoy the "spare two holes!"
Playing a Tom Doak course in Tasmania was something I had always wanted to do. So knowing I’d be in the region I decided to seize the opportunity!
Got to play the course by myself and in excellent conditions. The price is very competitive for course of this quality though I feel they could do better with a couple of goodies and a higher end approach.
As for the course, though excellent as expected I find it a bit too uneven with the front 9 being one of the best in the world with holes 3-7 being top top class including the par 3 7th, Tom little devil, and the back 9 is somehow less fabulous and flatter.
For the anecdote my round became truly unforgettable when I crossed path with a Kangaroo on the 16th tee box!
We got to stay at the hotel (lost farm) and that was very nice though the diner was a let down for the price.
Definitely a great resort to come and play at!
Found this a stiffer test than Barnbougle's Lost Farm course, particularly the front nine, which was playing tough with the wind blowing opposite to the normal prevailing wind. Nonetheless, Tom Doak has carved out a wonderful course amongst the sand dunes, especially holes 4 to 9 situated adjacent to the ocean.
The clubhouse offers great dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the staff throughout the resort are first-class.
