Greg Norman served as architect for Settlers Run in 2007, and he got the most out of this splendid location less than an hour outside of Melbourne, which was perfect for a designer like Norman, with his admiration for the classic designs of Alister MacKenzie for Melbourne in the 1920s. Thus the bunkering here recalls the Melbourne Sandbelt style with its broad swathes, as opposed to the modest pots that dot some other courses. The fairways, by contrast, are ample and forgiving, and like the tees are planted in couch grass, with a hybrid bent variety for the greens, so play along the ground is quick and sure. The landscaping owes a large debt to the Royal Botanic Gardens in nearby Cranbourne. The fully stocked clubhouse at Settlers Run is contemporary and striking, and the whole complex is overseen by the leading name in the management of luxury courses, Troon Golf.
