Our second stop on our NI-Scotland-Ireland trip was Royal County Down. We came in with very high expectations and boy it did not disappoint! We got to the club late on a Wednesday as the sun was coming down, so we got the chance to have a quick glimpse at the property and stayed at the nice hotel right behind the first tee.
With the excitement we got to the putting green at 7:20 for a tee time at 8:05. First on the course, no one after us for a full hour and perfect conditions. As soon as we teed it off, we realized how unique and mystical this place is. The front 9 is indeed, the best front 9 you can play with all holes being absolutely great. The view from the 4th tee box, the 1st par 3 of the course enabled us to contemplate the mountain, the sea, the gorse bushes, the club house and the hotel. We took it all in!
The course is challenging indeed, with a couple of blind shots and not so easy greens. Bunkers are perfectly placed and you must play well to score. However, (maybe I was in a good day), I found the course fair and very enjoyable.
Overall, it was my best golf experience as this place combines everything I am looking for when playing a course: history, uniqueness, beauty, challenges & fairness. It was a truly remarkable experience that I would highly recommend any golf lover to try!
