Kempferhof Golf Resort, located fairly near Strasbourg, occupies the expansive, forested grounds of a mansion that dates to the 1800s; the clubhouse is even a converted hunting lodge from the period. The vintage feel extends beyond the lodge to the course itself, despite the fact that the club is only a couple of decades old. The course itself, laid out here by American designer Robert von Hagge, is challenging, especially given its modest dimensions: players will need to shoot straight from the tee as well as from the fairway to earn a respectable score. Von Hagge's US roots are evident in his taste for water hazards, but many other challenges are built into his course here. Kempferhof lies outside France's main golfing centers, but visitors to the region are advised to pack their clubs in order to experience the tranquil setting and to appreciate the superb maintenance of all the facilities.
