The aptly designated No. 1 is indisputably the best of Gullane's three courses. The site, extending from the clubhouse around and over a large rise to the Firth of Forth beyond does not seem especially promising at the outset. Once the first few holes have led you up the rise, however, you find yourself playing some breathtaking golf, with a panoramic vista across the Firth to Fife, Muirfield to the east and, when the air is clear, Edinburgh in the other direction. With such open country, on the other hand, comes exposure to the gusts off the shore. The earliest layouts were built well over a century ago by pioneering architects whose names are lost to time. As on the oldest courses, the greens are pretty much just carefully manicured patches at the end of the fairways. The bunkers have real teeth, and the unkempt fescue rough also deserves respect.

I have played this course 3 times now with a member friend and each time I love it more and more. The club is welcoming (very female friendly and pictures of Gullane lady golfers from the early 20th century adorn the walls outside the ladies changing rooms) - though the club was a separate ladies club then. The first hole is one you don’t see played at championship events as it’s the spectacular 2nd hole that serves as the first for these: a dramatic uphill and narrow par 4. Over the brow there are stunning views across the Firth of Forth and lots more demanding golf - with the wind having a major impact. Every hole is memorable and each has its own challenges depending on your handicap. Links golf at its best and watching my experienced member friend playing the roll and lie of the fairway and greens reminded me that links golf is a game of tactics!

Great course, if not a little quirky. Love the close, compact nature of the holes.
