Maybe it was because it was already the 5th round in 2.5 days in a 3rd country or maybe it was the temperature (2°C), but we did not enjoy Dundonald as much as expected. I like Kyle Philipps designs, especially Kingsbarns which is to me of the very top courses in the world, but I was a bit disappointed. Unlike it is next door neighbors (Western Gailes), you get to see a very ugly factory and you hear the cars on several holes. The tee boxes were banged up too, which was also a disappointment. For the rest, it was still a very good course with a nice layouts and good bunkering. I still have nightmares of the par 4 9th where I had a very good drive and was left with 60 yards, and thought I hit a good shot, but the slope punished me brutally! Unlike other links we played on this trip, you can't really roll 7 irons onto the greens as they are well defended which forces you to hit good shots to score well.
Overall it was a good course, though we much preferred Western Gailes (more secluded and purer).
