Carnoustie, Scotland

course description

Carnoustie, founded in 1842, is another one of those ancient Scottish clubs, and it is remarkable for the way that it has held its own as equipment and approaches to the game have evolved. Even at its original length and without added hazards, the layout maintains its reputation as one of the most punishing anywhere in the North Atlantic. Carnoustie was added as a venue to the Open in 1931, and among the victors here have been Tommy Armour, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Tom Watson. In 1975 it was decided that the limited access provided by the local infrastructure was insufficient, and Carnoustie was dropped from the rotation, but eventually the issue was resolved and the Open was again hosted here in 1999 and 2007. The layout is more level than on most links, but apart from dunes all the elements of a classic links are to be found at Carnoustie.
