General informations

Rees Jones, Greg Muirhead, A. W. Tillinghast

Open Country, Parkland

During the Depression, demand for A. W. Tillinghast's services diminished sharply, and the great course architect was reduced to getting by as a part-time employee of the PGA. He must therefore have been overjoyed when he received the commission to design three public courses at Beth Page State Park on Long Island and not far from Manhattan. Two of those courses, the Red and the Blue, were put down on some rather unimpressive parkland, but the Black was more fortunate. The course was nevertheless neglected during and for some time after World War II, but finally the USGA invested the millions of dollars needed to bring it up to championship standards. Tiger Woods won the US Open here in 2002, and the event returned to Bethpage in 2009. Modern courses tend to lack the size and challenges required for tournament play without some pre-event stiffening, but not so the Black.

I’ve probably played the Black 30 times. It’s my favourite course in the world and it feels great to come back here, I have a lot of really great memories of this course.

Top 100 by Golf Digest, 2 US Opens, several Barclays, a PGA in 2019 and a Ryder Cup in 2024... not bad for a public course 45 min away from Manhattan. One cannot reserves the course, so you have to go onsite and hope to get in (not as difficult as people tend to say) and if you really can't in, 4 other courses are there to welcome you. The red is probably the second best by far (did not play it). From the very first tee, the sign says it all: "the Black course is a extremely difficult course which we recommend only for highly skilled golfer". From the back tees, the course is way too difficult for the non pro golfer. From the fairways, greens are not easy to hit but from the roughs they are impossible to hit. Any shot that isn't struck perfectly will be highly punished... The par 5 4th is one of the most iconic holes on the property with the 3 plateaus and the huge bunkers to seperate each level. A beast. Like the par 4 15th where the green is as high as a 6-story building... after a long drive facing the wind... And before you reach an "easier" par 4 18th with bunkers on the right and the left where the clubhouse stares at you, the par 3 17th would have most likely stabbed you a couple of times. Indeed, this uphill 207-yard shot requires a very high ball to land on the green... good luck as even the pros are struggling! Overall, this course is an absolute beast that proved to be way to much for me... but I'll make sure to give it another shot soon!
