course description

Stanley Thompson designed what was perhaps the most costly course yet to be constructed at its opening in 1929. Banff Springs is among the best courses Thompson designed, so visitors are advised to play the eighteen holes named after him, rather than the fairly average "Tunnel" nine that Bill Robinson designed in the Eighties. The main appeal of Thompson's course is its use of the Bow River and the setting beneath the towering vistas of Mt. Rundle and Sulphur Mountain. The signature hole is the 200-yard par 3 4th, the "Devil's Cauldron," which plays out over a limpid mountain pond leading to a green protected by imposing bunkers. Some have found fault with changes to some holes when a new clubhouse and driving range were constructed in 1998, but the natural beauty and the skill required continue to make this one of the world's premier arenas for golf in the mountains.
