Located in the wilds of Texas on the shores of Lake Livingston a couple hours outside of Houston, Whispering Pines Golf Club is home to a Jack Nicklaus masterpiece that should be required study for all contemporary designers. Nicklaus showed remarkable restraint, allowing the fairways to remain level and extending the route among winding streams and large ponds where the lay of the land led him; indeed it is hard to see how it could be otherwise. The grounds feature a lovely mix of hardwoods and evergreens. The course is open for play in the spring and fall—the Texas heat from June through August is simply unbearable. The club, which opened in 2000, prides itself on taking part in a number of charitable organizations that promote golf and fitness through its World Health and Golf Association. The facilities include a driving range and a short game practice area.
