Newbury, The United States

course description

Rees Jones laid out this course on 260 acres of peaceful forest that was in the eighteenth century the farmstead of Benjamin Baker. The site abounds in lovely New England scenery, with views of several peaks and of picturesque Lake Sunapee. Three centuries-old farm buildings form the basis for the striking clubhouse. The course is eminently fair, with no obscured shots or blind hazards, but it is not easy. Fairways are narrow, and the rolling terrain elongates some holes and makes others smaller. The 14th through the 18th deserve special mention as a closing series, with two par 3s two and 4s each, and the striking 15th, aka the Gambler's Dilemma, which Jones describes as "one of the best risk and reward short par 5s in golf." Baker Hill offers classic country club golf, and is well worth the effort it takes to get to this part of New Hampshire.
