The Ocean South
Tom Fazio created two courses for the Pelican Hill resort, which is located down the coast from LA. Of the pair, Ocean South is slightly the better owing to its better orientation to the shore. The architecture of the club's buildings has an Italian feel, with columns and even Roman-style baths, though someone has seen fit to include a couple pagodas here and there. The ground is rugged and cut with ravines leading to the ocean, and the routing proceeds up and down. Each of the holes is distinct; some are links-like, and nearly every one features fantastic ocean panoramas. One of the more memorable is the 16th, with a water hazard that makes it seem as if you're playing right out to sea. Ever one to dote on his creations, Fazio returned for renovations in the mid-2000s and made the Ocean South even better.
