Desert Golf Course
Jack Nicklaus created this course for Desert Highlands Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ at the foot of Pinnacle Peak, and he has returned to tweak it repeatedly over the years. Nicklaus' intriguing design offers plenty of scenery and different kinds of holes, with a distinctive final stretch of a pair of par 3s and then a pair of par 5s. The signature hole, though, would have to be the 418-yard, par 4 14th, which proceeds up to a raised, double-terraced green framed by the Peak. Overall, the course is demanding but straightforward, and eminently playable, though fair to average players may have a hard time making their handicaps, and are advised to come well stocked with balls. The staff tends the grounds every day, so maintenance is always superb. A separate par 41 eighteen laid out by Gary Panks shares the site, but the Nicklaus course is naturally the real draw.
