The Country Club of Florida officially opened on December 1, 1956, and a year and a half later, on April 10-16, 1958, the Western Golf Association held its 56th Western Amateur Championship at the brand new Robert Bruce Harris course. It was the first Western Amateur to ever take place in the Southeast. The eighteen hole routing was creative and unique. Both nines were identical regarding the order of par fours, fives and threes.
After 20 years Arthur Hills was awarded the contract to remodel the course in 1987. The new approach taken was quite dramatic, even though the routing of the holes was left untouched. Thirty-three sand bunkers were eliminated which reduced the total to fifty-five. The design change was so dramatic in style and beauty that upon completion the thirteenth hole ended up replacing the fourth as the Club's signature hole.
