Gulf Harbour earned worldwide attention when the 1998 World Cup was played there and Britons Nick Faldo and David Carter won an upset and claimed the prize for their country for the first time in over half a century. The club has since hosted the New Zealand Open twice (in 2005 and 2006). The inevitable Pebble Beach comparisons are not inaccurate, since some of the first nine are set on a high ridge, and the back nine on rolling terrain with spectacular views of the sea. Measuring 6419 meters off the tips, the course definitely has tournament length, but also multiple tee positions that accommodate those who haven't turned pro. The design by Robert Trent Jones II carries on the family tradition of making the most out of any site, and Jones is known to be especially satisfied with the challenge posed by the last few holes.

Lydia Ko played and practiced at Gulf Harbour from her early teens up until the time she began traveling on the LPGA Tour. This course offered her many golf challenges she would experience no matter where she played in the world. I was a member at Gulf Habour for 7 years and Lydia was very approachable and always had time to talk. Robert Trent Jones, Jr., known as “the father of environmental golf course design” who has said he “listens to the land” when creating a golf course, designed this 7000-yard par 72 course. The magnificent views begin on the fourth tee on this course located on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula 45 minutes north of Auckland. As you work your way up the dramatically steep 11th fairway you begin to take in spectacular ocean views which are fully in view on the 12th tee. The 463-yard par 4 16th, a dogleg right, is the signature hole and the most difficult hole on the course. From the tee, you hit over a deep ravine to a spiraling right sloped fairway which draws any short drive into deep rough. This can be avoided by hitting diagonally at directly at the green over the ocean and rough terrain as John Daley did when he played there in the World Cup Competition in 1998. For mortals, it is an extremely high-risk track to take.
