The course was designed by Reg Plumbridge, a professional golfer and golf course architect, who has also designed a number of courses in Essex. The original plan was for an 18-hole main course, Driving Range, and 5-hole academy course, with a 9-hole par three to be known as Stonyhill Golf Club named after the local woodland. The 18 holes designated Heron and Hawk was constructed in 1993-1994, along with the putting green and two other holes. The course was constructed by the Ely Brothers and opened in the summer of 1994 with a temporary clubhouse. The original plans were modified after the opening of the main course and during 1997-1998 a further nine holes called the Vixen were constructed by Whitnalls and a new driving range and a barn-style clubhouse were also developed. The course was renamed South Essex Golf and Country Club, and opened in the spring of 1998.
