Jay Morrish, frequent collaborator with Tom Weiskopf, worked solo on the course at Stone Canyon outside Tucson, a city that is coming to rival Palm Springs as a center for desert Golf. The course here is part of a private, residential development in the foothills of the Tortolita Mountains. Morrish's layout makes the most of a rugged, arid setting that includes stone cliffs, gullies that spring to life during the very occasional rains and the iconic towering cacti of the Southwest. The key to creating courses in this part of the country is to make as little impact on the landscape as possible, not only because of the delicacy of the desert ecosystem, but also so as to avoid detracting from the spectacular surroundings. Morrish has shown here at Stone Canyon that he knows what it takes to make golf possible in a rugged environment by merging his holes with that environment.
