A combination of stunning coastal views, centuries of history and hugely enjoyable golf is what makes Balcomie Links one of Scotland’s most finely polished, golfing gems.

This traditional, classic links course was laid out by the old master himself, Tom Morris, and opened in 1895. Created in the days when course design was governed by the natural lie of the land and not the mechanical earth mover, Balcomie has the unusual combination of three par fives, six par threes and nine par fours, producing a tough par of 69. Extraordinary holes abound, along with those which seriously challenge and those which are more comfortable. The sum total is a layout which both enchants and delights, but which also demands and punishes, testing all the skills in a golfer’s armoury – as well as his nerve. Those length seekers who believe Balcomie will be a soft touch, do so at their peril.

After a morning round and a long lunch break at Kingsbarns we decided to play another round at nearby Crail. Crail Golfing Society is the 7th oldest Golf Club in the world. If you enter the clubhouse you will see some cool memorabilities on your left.  Make sure to check it out. Crail has two 18 hole courses. The Balcomie that we played was designed by Old Tom Morris in 1895. The Craighead course was designed by Gil Hanse. Since it was later in the afternoon the club secretary offered us to play as many holes as we want for 30£. Considering that we paid 215£ in the morning at Kingsbarns that sure was extremely good value for money! The Balcomie course is rather short by today's standard and there isn't much rough to be found on the course. It's main defense is certainly the wind and some well placed bunkers. Standing on the first tee you will see most of the course in front of you. The first hole starts with a downhill par 4. The stretch from the 3rd to the 5th hole is the strongest of the course for me. The 3rd is a good par 3 to a partially blind and well contoured green. Both the 4th and 5th hole are cape style dogleft right par 4 holes. You need to carry the sea from the tee and chew off as much as you dare. Being too short is dead as the sea is out of bounds. Pretty exciting tee shots both times. Two other great holes are the 13th and 14th. The 13th is a long uphill par 3 to a blind green. A very demanding tee shot. The 14th is probably the most scenic hole on the course. It's downhill and guarded by a big bunker in front of the green. Overall the Balcomie is a good course and very good value for money. It's one of the lesser known courses in Fife but well worth a visit. And the clubhouse view isn't too shabby either!
