Ramsau is mainly associated with winter sports, set as it is some 1200 meters high in the foothills of the Dachstein Mountains, west of Vienna and south of the highway to Stuttgart. While outstanding for skiing in winter, the location also provides a stunning backdrop for golf in summer. The championship course - there are another lovely short 9 holes - clings to the mountainside, where the holes seem to hang on with the aid of crampons. With a steep hill on one side, sharp drop-off on the other, this course is more a feat of engineering than architecture. Not particularly long, this course is great fun, unlike some new courses, and of course offers stunning mountain and valley views on all sides. Play cautiously, or the ball will plunge downhill or become lodged on insurmountable hill. Family-owned, the condition is excellent, benefiting from only being open half the year.
