Here at Gut Larchenhof, Jack Nicklaus again demonstrated his skill at transforming a nondescript location. Nicklaus commands a hefty fee for his work, but his reputation as player and architect and his extensive experience pretty much guarantee that he will be able to convert even level parkland into something special. Contoured, links-style fairways, water hazards and thick fescue rough make for some fun and exciting play. The design here would not look out of place in Florida, and the attention to detail, playability and difficulty attracted such venues as the German Masters and Mercedes Classic from nearly the moment the doors first opened. Among the stars who have shone here are Bernard Langer, Padraig Harrington and Retief Goosen. Scores are respectable but there are no blowouts, and the course reliably separates the men from the boys. The right selection of tees is all that is necessary to ensure a good round.
