Located in the state's Pinehurst Sandhills area, the exclusive, members-only Country Club of North Carolina is known for hosting the Pinehurst No. 2 Championship. The peaceful site features varied topography and abundant natural water; the associated housing is unobtrusive. There are two courses here, the Cardinal and the Dogwood. Water is in play on nearly half of the Dogwood's holes, and there are many big bunkers. Greens are also big, as well as fast; some are elevated, making for tricky roll-offs. One of the standout holes is the 13th, which measures nearly two hundred yards and plays to one of those elevated greens. Overall, Ellis Maples' layout rewards drives and puts irons and shots to the green to the test. Arthur Hills carried out significant renovations of Maples' work in the 1990s, toning down some of the bunkering and sprucing up a number of the greens.
