It is no wonder that Clearwater Bay is sometimes called the Pebble Beach of Asia, positioned as it is on a rugged spit of land surrounded by the South China Sea an hour or so outside downtown Hong Kong. Sea breezes and roaring breakers frame the first four holes for a kick-off that is unsurpassed in China. Amid the excellent holes on the front "Ocean" nine, the signature is the 220-yard, par 4 3rd, which calls for a power drive from the tips out over the sea. The back "Highland" nine has its own character, having been threaded amid the contours of the terrain; especially noteworthy here are 13th and the final hole that require shots over lush little valleys. The Australian Thompson Perrett firm brought the Clearwater Bay up to tournament standards with renovations in 2006. The club is semi-private, being open to non-members before noon on Monday through Friday.
