Built over 600 acres, the Bonville is often called Australia's Augusta for its site and its flora, with its magnificent gardens and trees, blackbutt, ironbark and tallowwood, and varied topography. The summit is home to the wildlife for which the country is famous, koalas, cockatoos, water dragons and goannas, and in the wallabies and kangaroos that come out into the light rough in the evenings. With a visually stunning mixture of uphill and downhill doglegs and plenty of water, the course is fun and not too difficult. A golf cart is recommended given the rolling terrain and the considerable distance that separates several greens from the next tee. The Bonville was voted Australia's most beautiful course for seven consecutive years in local golf course guides, and Australia's leading golf resort at the World Travel Awards 2006. The sprawling clubhouse is comfortable and well appointed, and the service low-key and discrete.

We had never heard of Bonville until a friend recommended it just before our trip, saying it was “the Augusta of Australia” and for the long drive there I was annoying Mrs V by wondering a little too often if we were doing the right thing, and whether going out of our way was worth it. Pulling into the golf club car park all doubts disappeared as the golf course looks astonishingly beautiful, and we are immediately delighted that we are playing it twice. From the very first hole, which is a tough but stunning dog-leg par 4, the course is picture book perfect. Generally we found it quite forgiving, especially compared with previous outings on our Australian tour, although we had a little more confidence about snakes and other killers lurking to get us, so maybe swung a little more freely. As a consequence we both scored well. The greens were quite slow but were perfectly maintained and manicured, as was the entire course. It was almost too beautiful to focus on playing golf seriously as there were just too many photo opportunities. One of the things we remember was getting to each green and looking back, and the view was even better!! Bonville truly is one of the most beautiful courses imaginable, without a doubt a 5star rating! Off the course accommodation was pretty basic and functional, but dinner (and the wine offering) in the clubhouse were excellent.
