Eric Bergstol has tried to reproduce on the coast of New Jersey a links course like those found in England, Ireland and Scotland, and he has to a considerable extent succeeded. Bergstol is better known for developing golf complexes than for designing courses, but at Bayonne he distinguishes himself both for the beauty of the layout and the management of the extensive resources that went into realizing his vision. Massive earth moving on reclaimed industrial property created enormous man-made sand dunes that serve as the basis for this challenging course. Reachable by car or ferry, the club greets players with a homey clubhouse that looks out on the skyscrapers of New York. Despite the proximity of the sea, water is not a significant factor at most holes. Adding to the enjoyment are city vistas including the Brooklyn and Verrazano bridges and boats and ships of all sizes on New York Harbor.
