Tom Doak and Michael Clayton share a love of great traditional courses from the first half of the 20th century and before, and having found a wonderful piece of land at Barnbougle Dunes in Tasmania, they do it full justice, creating a course that could grace the shores of Ireland or Scotland. Though, as with all the best courses, the wind can surely blow, this course is fair, with all the hazards visible. The clubhouse sits in the midst of the course, bracketed by two loops of nine holes, which prevents any long stretch of holes into or down wind. Perhaps the best hole is the 15th, a splendid par four along an inlet next to a dune ridge. After play the well-appointed clubhouse offers a warm welcome, with a restaurant, a bistro and an excellent wine cellar, not to mention the great dormitory facilities that are essential on far-away courses.
