Winged Foot Golf Club - West Course

White Plains, The United States

course description

Winged Foot's West is the club's premier course, and it achieved early fame as the site of Bobby Jones's victory in the 1929 US Open Championship. Unfortunately, however, the golf here just doesn't live up to the reputation, for the holes are unremarkable, and made challenging only because of their lengthiness and tricky greens. That's fine for tournament play; thus in the 1959 Open, Billy Casper was victorious in part because he played the par 3 3rd short and made it in with a single chip and putt. Extensive renovations were undertaken by Rees Jones in preparation for the Open in 2006, so the West remains a bruiser. Among the golf royalty who have been part of the life of the club are Claude Harmon, pro for over thirty years and 1948 Masters champ, and his golf-playing four sons, among them Butch, coach to both Greg Norman and Tiger Woods.
