Morfontaine Golf Club

(5 reviews)

Mortefontaine, France

course description

The history of Golf de Morfontaine traces back to 1913, when the Duc de Guiche brought in Tom Simpson to construct nine holes on a converted polo ground, and was so delighted with the way his nine melded with its surroundings that he summoned Simpson back seven years later to create eighteen more holes. The Englishman returned some time later to rework the first nine, and more recently American Kyle Phillips carried out some renovations. The drive through the woods and past some of the holes to the clubhouse, which looks like a miniature mansion and gazes out over the 9th at the Vallières, sets the scene; visitors can feel the history. Being an older course, Morfontaine is naturally relatively lacking in length and breadth. Amenities include an outstanding practice area and, if it can rightly be called an amenity, the sheer pleasure of a timeless golfing experience.

played the course in the summer of 2016. Probably the best and most beautiful inland course in Europe. Particularly liked the area 16/17 and 18.
