Whangaparaoa, New Zealand

course description

Gulf Harbour earned worldwide attention when the 1998 World Cup was played there and Britons Nick Faldo and David Carter won an upset and claimed the prize for their country for the first time in over half a century. The club has since hosted the New Zealand Open twice (in 2005 and 2006). The inevitable Pebble Beach comparisons are not inaccurate, since some of the first nine are set on a high ridge, and the back nine on rolling terrain with spectacular views of the sea. Measuring 6419 meters off the tips, the course definitely has tournament length, but also multiple tee positions that accommodate those who haven't turned pro. The design by Robert Trent Jones II carries on the family tradition of making the most out of any site, and Jones is known to be especially satisfied with the challenge posed by the last few holes.
