Barwon Heads, Australia

course description

Barwon Heads is one of the few genuine links courses outside the British Isles, founded in 1921 by Australian enthusiasts Victor East and Mick Morcam on little windswept corner of Victoria, 70 kilometers west of Melbourne. It is not long at 5856 meters and has the characteristic for a windy course of allowing holes to be played through the air or along the ground. The winds mostly come off nearby Bass Straight, but vary, so the course rarely plays the same on any two given days. What the course lacks in length is made up for by cleverly positioned hazards and intriguing, tricky greens. For a little old country course, the greens are almost always in splendid condition and are mown daily, winter and summer alike. Plan an overnight stay, since the old clabber board clubhouse offers great “Dormy House” facilities, and dinner, bed and breakfast are not to be missed.
