Augusta, The United States

course description

The Augusta Hill course in Georgia is naturally overshadowed by the Augusta National, though it deserves recognition in its own right. The two courses actual both make use of the same natural water hazard, Rae's Creek (for the 12th and 13th on the National), and a bit of the Hill can be glimpsed by those watching the Masters behind the latter course's 13th. The original Hill course dates to the early 1900s, but today's layout is largely the work of pioneering designer Donald Ross in the Twenties, and apart from some necessary lengthening Ross's vision remains largely undisturbed, in particular his trademark bunkering, and in any case the Hill has weathered the passage of the years in fine style. At 6400 meters, this is a course that accomplished amateurs can take on from the back tees, and that casual players can feel comfortable on, unlike so many modern and renovated courses.
