course description

Ashton-in-Makerfield Golf Club is predominently a parkland course set in the mature former estate of Lord Gerard. The Club was founded in 1902 in nearby Bryn and moved to its current location in 1965 when land for a nine hole course was purchased. Work to extend it to 18 holes commenced in 1974. "Current members now enjoy the benefits laid down by Lord Gerard in the 19th century, when he planted species of trees from every country in the British Empire. His legacy is a golf course often described as a miniature Wentworth where precision driving is essential". (The Society of Liverpool Golf Captains). The par 70 parkland course stands at 6223 yards from the white tees, 5918 yards from the yellow and 5306 from the ladies tees. It offers a number of narrow tree-lined fairways and small greens which will test golfers at all levels. Ashton offers no easy introduction to the course and many golfers may find the hazards on the first five holes a challenge. However, it is clear from the testimonials received that this constantly improving golf course provides a pleasing experience of risk and reward which visitors are happy to return to time and time again.
